Ottawa, ON – Aaron Gunn, Conservative Shadow Minister for Ethics and Accountable Government, released the following statement after Liberal MPs on the Ethics Committee blocked an investigation into Prime Minister Carney’s condo bailout:
“Over the past eleven years, the Liberals have spent more, taxed more and delivered worse results for Canadians. While Mark Carney claims ‘affordability’s the best it’s been in over a decade,’ BC housing prices have risen 50 per cent since the Liberals took office, with Victoria residents needing to earn over $180,000 to afford a home.
“Yet last month, the Prime Minister announced a $1.45 billion bailout for industry insiders, putting Canadians on the hook for 2,200 unsold condo units. Privatizing the profits for bankers and developers while socializing the losses at the taxpayer’s expense.
“Instead of letting the price of these units come down, the government created an artificial price floor to protect investors from the consequences of their own decisions. Now, Canadians are stuck paying for a housing scheme that won’t create a single new home.
“Canadians deserve to know who benefits from this decision and why it was made. British Columbians didn’t ask for it. Even Carney admitted that ‘no developer asked for this from me directly.’ So who did?
“The proposal came after two fundraisers held in Vancouver during his leadership campaign and in February 2026, where attendees paid up to $1,750 for a closed-door fundraiser, ‘An Evening with Mark Carney.’ After attending high-priced fundraisers with developers reportedly in attendance, Carney announced a plan where well-connected insiders, power brokers and corporate lobbyists get all the benefits while sticking Canadians with all the losses.
“The Liberal Club shouldn’t benefit from the public’s expense, and Canadians deserve full transparency to ensure that nobody is given undue benefit. That’s why Conservatives put forward a motion at the Ethics Committee to investigate where Carney’s plan came from and give Canadians the answers they deserve.
“Instead, Liberal MPs voted against the motion, using their majority to shut down debate and block the investigation. Once again, Liberals chose to defend the carve-outs, bail-outs and hand-outs for the Liberal Club while delivering higher costs, debt and taxes for everyone else.
“Liberals need to stop the illusions and get out of the way so that builders can build and buyers can buy. Conservatives have a plan to scrap the GST on all new homes under $1.3 million and cut red tape to ensure faster, safer permitting. We will restore the promise that if you work hard, you can afford a good home on a safe street.”
