Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Vyshyvanka Day:
“From the very beginning, embroidery has been at the heart of Ukrainian folk culture. For countless generations, cloths cross-stitched with ancient patterns have adorned holy icons, covered Easter baskets and stood beneath the feet of marrying couples.
“Today, we celebrate the vyshyvanka: a symbol of this rich heritage that Ukrainians have carried and adapted into the modern world.
“But what we celebrate today goes beyond mere clothing, because it is pride in their customs, language and history that motivates so many brave Ukrainians to defend their homeland against the criminal Putin regime.
“We also have a chance to reflect on the generations of Canadians of Ukrainian heritage who helped build the Canada we know and love.
“On behalf of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I want to wish all those celebrating a very happy Vyshyvanka Day!”
