Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Ukrainian Independence Day:
“Thirty-five years ago, after generations of Soviet rule, the Ukrainian people proudly reclaimed their independence.
“This year, for the fifth time, Ukraine marks this holiday in the face of Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion: a conflict that has both shocked the world and showcased the resilience of a nation.
“Conservatives are proud to stand firmly with the Ukrainian people in defence of their rights and sovereignty, as we did at the start of this conflict over a decade ago.
“Under the principled leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Canada helped train Ukraine’s defenders under Operation UNIFIER and played a central role in removing the Russian Federation from what was then the G8.
“And today, we are committed to defunding Putin’s war machine by promoting Canadian oil and gas as an alternative to Moscow’s energy blackmail.
“For more than a century, Canadians of Ukrainian heritage settled the Prairies, built farms and churches, founded businesses and established strong communities from coast to coast.
“From the distinctive artistry of pysanky and vyshyvanky to folk music, poetry, dance and cuisine, Ukrainian culture has endured for generations through good times and bad.
“They have been leaders like Ray Hnatyshyn and Michael Starr, war heroes like Filip Konowal and Peter Dmytruk, and artists like William Kurelek and Leo Mol. This vibrant community has defended our freedoms, shaped our institutions and contributed to a more prosperous Canada for all.
“Looking forward to a better, peaceful future, on behalf of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I want to wish all those celebrating a happy Ukrainian Independence Day!
