Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Tisha B’Av:

“This evening, Jewish communities across Canada and the world commemorate Tisha B’Av. Through solemn fasting, heartfelt repentance, and the chanting from the book of Lamentations, this is a time for Jews to mourn and remember the centuries of persecution endured by their people.

“From the destruction of the first and second temples and forced exile, to the horrors of the Holocaust and attacks of October 7th, the Jewish people have remained strong, continuing to pass on their traditions, faith and identity.

“At a time when we are once again seeing the shameful rise of antisemitism across our communities, Tisha B’av is also a recognition of the incredible resilience displayed by Canada’s Jewish community: today and throughout history.

“Conservatives stand firmly against all acts of hatred and discrimination. Canada must remain a place where Jewish families, and Canadians of all faiths and backgrounds, are safe, where places of worship are protected, and violent antisemitic hate crimes are a thing of the past.”
