Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on the anniversary of the Lac-Mégantic tragedy:
“On July 6, 2013, Canada witnessed the deadliest rail disaster in our history. Today, we remember the 47 people who lost their lives when a runaway train carrying petroleum derailed, and the thousands more who were affected.
“Yesterday’s train derailment in Repentigny reminds us of that tragic incident. I am relieved to know that no Repentignois lost their life or was injured.
“In the years that followed, the people of Lac-Mégantic mobilized to restore the town’s library, markets and the cherished ‘Musi-Café’ bar.
“Méganticois proved that neither this terrible incident nor its aftermath could break the spirit of that incredible community. Their resilience beautifully embodies our core Canadian values of kindness, generosity and compassion towards our fellow neighbours.
“Canada must also not forget the courage of the first responders who took bold action, fighting seemingly unstoppable fires to protect the local residents.
“On this day of remembrance, we must remember the mothers, fathers and children who perished and strive to ensure that such a disaster never happens again.”
