Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on the Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge:
“On April 9th, 1917, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps launched their offensive at Vimy Ridge. Standing together on the battlefield for the first time, they charged against the wind-driven snow and sleet into the face of deadly shellfire. The four days of this costly battle would ultimately deliver victory to the Allies, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of our country and shaping the world for generations to come.
“Today, we honour the indomitable spirit of the 100,000 Canadian soldiers who transcended borders to stand united on that hallowed ground. With heads bowed, we remember the nearly 3,600 Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice and the more than 10,000 others who were injured in the line of duty.
“Over a century later, the Battle of Vimy Ridge represents more than just a battlefield victory. Today, it is remembered not only as a testament to Canada’s military prowess but also as a symbol of the unyielding spirit and determination that forged our national identity. It is rightly known from sea to shining sea as a powerful moment in our heritage.
“Though they couldn’t have known it at the time, these brave patriots are credited for spearheading “the birth of a nation” – the Canada we know and love.
“Their courage and sacrifice echo through the ages, reminding us of Canada’s incredible strength in adversity and of our profound duty to safeguard the freedoms they fought to secure for our common home. Lest we forget.”
