Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on the 121st Anniversary of Saskatchewan joining Confederation:
“One hundred and twenty-one years ago, the land of prairie wheat and northern white birch completed Canada’s western provinces as Saskatchewan was finally born.
“Saskatchewan was built by its people. By the Cree, Saulteaux and Métis who knew the land long before there were borders between provinces or countries. By the homesteaders who stepped off a train in Yorkton with a trunk, a team and a quarter section of grass.
“By the Ukrainians, Germans and Hungarians who arrived with nothing but their ancestral know-how and a willingness to carve homes, community and civilization out of an often harsh and unforgiving territory.
“None of this history was inherited by idle progeny. Instead, every generation – whether farmers facing the dustbowls that stripped the topsoil during the ‘Dirty Thirties’ or young men journeying from small towns to serve through two World Wars – the province earned its motto: Multis e Gentibus Vires – From many peoples, strength.
“Every day, a million and a quarter people turn vast resources – from the largest source of potash to one of the largest sources of durum, canola and lentils – into the goods that sustain our communities. When a nuclear reactor keeps the lights on in Ontario, there is a good chance the fuel came out of the Athabasca Basin.
“For one hundred and twenty-one years, Saskatchewanians from Estevan to Uranium City have built a province that can feed and fuel people across Canada and around the world. Let the inspiration of what we can build together inspire the next generation of pioneers to build an even stronger Saskatchewan within a united Canada.”
