Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on International Francophonie Day:

“Every March, Canada stands shoulder to shoulder with millions of people across the globe to celebrate the French language and the rich francophone culture that connects us beyond borders and oceans.

“Here at home, French is lived every day in communities from coast to coast to coast. Quebecers, Acadians, Franco-Ontarians, and francophones in the West and North all contribute to a living language spoken by more than nine million Canadians who work, learn, and raise their children in French.

“Francophones’ commitment to keep French strong in Canada is truly remarkable. It has been passed down for centuries within families, classrooms and communities. This commitment has helped and will continue to help preserve this essential part of our national identity for generations to come.

“For me, this is not theoretical. In my own home, Anaida and I raise our children in French. I am determined to defend the rights of francophones so they can live fully in their language, wherever they reside in our amazing country.

“Today, we celebrate the strength of Canada’s founding language and renew our resolve to protect and promote it.

Bonne Journée internationale de la Francophonie!”
