Ottawa, ON – Frank Caputo, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Safety, issued the following statement on Bill C-225 unanimously passing second reading:
“Conservatives are encouraged to see our Bill to strengthen the legal response to Intimate Partner Violence, also known as “Bailey’s Law”, pass second reading. The Bill is a response to the terrible tragedy of Bailey McCourt, who was viciously murdered by her former intimate partner mere hours after he was found guilty.
“I want to thank Bailey’s family, including Karen, Shane, Trish and Debbie, for their tireless advocacy pushing these major changes that are both possible and necessary. I also want to thank Carrie, who suffered in the attack that took Bailey’s life.
“Bill C-225 marks an important step toward reforming our criminal justice system. This Bill is a historic change that will help protect victims of intimate partner violence.
“Its passage will help confront and ultimately reduce the scourge of this serious problem in Canada. We hope for continued cooperation with all parties as the bill moves to committee.”
