Ottawa, ON – Kelly DeRidder, Conservative Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre, released the following statement on the Myanmar junta’s sham election:

“The Parliamentary Friends of Democratic Burma declare that the military junta’s planned ‘election’ on December 28, 2025 is a sham. It is neither free nor fair, and must not be recognized by Canada or any democratic nation.

“This upcoming sham election is a calculated attempt to legitimize the illegal 2021 coup and the regime’s ongoing war crimes against the people of Myanmar. The junta has:

  • Appointed its own loyalists to the Union Election Commission;
  • Dissolved the National League for Democracy;
  • Banned voting in the 60-65% of the country controlled by resistance forces; and
  • Criminalized all criticism of the process.

“To accept the outcome of this sham election would betray the millions of Myanmar people – including the Rohingya – who are fighting for a genuine federal democracy.

“Canada must stand firmly with Myanmar’s people and their revolution. Recognizing this sham election is not an option.”
