Ottawa, ON – Rachael Thomas, Conservative Shadow Minister for Canadian Identity and Culture and Member of Parliament for Lethbridge, introduced the Ending Sentence Reductions for Sexual Predators Act.
Bill C-246 aims to amend the Criminal Code to require courts to impose consecutive sentences, not concurrent, on individuals convicted of sexual offences. In plain terms, sexual predators will no longer be able to “stack” their crimes and walk away with a reduced sentence. Each crime will carry its own penalty, and each victim will receive the recognition they deserve.
“For over a decade, Liberal justice policies have tilted the scales in favour of criminals, eroding the safety and dignity of victims and communities,” said Thomas. “Time and again, Liberal reforms have prioritized repeat offenders, sending the clear message that protecting predators matters more than protecting Canadians. That must end.”
Sexual violence is one of the most devastating violations a person can endure, robbing victims of their dignity, safety and trust. Yet under the current system, multiple assaults are too often treated as one. This minimizes harm, undervalues suffering, weakens deterrence, and erodes public faith in justice. Since 2015, sexual assaults are up nearly 75 per cent while offences against children up 120 per cent.
“Canadians deserve a justice system that puts victims’ rights first. This legislation closes a loophole that has long let predators escape full accountability,” added Thomas.
“Standing with victims means putting their safety, dignity, and recovery ahead of offenders’ interests. Sexual predators should never walk away with reduced sentences. This Private Member’s Bill ensures every crime is counted, and every victim is recognized,” Thomas concluded.
