Ottawa, ON – Amid rising global fuel costs, Canadians are still stuck paying far more at the pump than Americans do.
That’s why, yesterday, Conservatives introduced a motion in the House of Commons calling on the government to end all federal taxes on gas and diesel for the rest of 2026, including the GST, and permanently scrapping the Clean Fuel Standard.
Today, the Liberals rejected that motion, sticking to a pause of just one third of the taxes for one third of the year. After all, in the Minister of Finance’s view, the government has “already acted.”
But Liberal inaction has left Canadians paying over 17 cents more on average per litre than drivers south of the border do, and over 40 cents more than we did in 2014, when prices were also over $100 per barrel.
Rising fuel costs raise the cost of living, with grocery prices up nearly 4 per cent year-over-year. As StatsCan themselves noted, energy costs were a major part of the most recent inflation numbers, with gas alone up 28.6 per cent compared to 2025.
No wonder food inflation has outpaced overall inflation for every single month since Mark Carney took office.
All of this comes on top of years of anti-development, growth-killing Liberal laws and bureaucracy that handicap our Canadian energy sector and block our workers from getting our resources to market.
Conservatives will always fight for a Canada that is strong, affordable and safe.
