OTTAWA, ON — Stephanie Kusie, MP for Calgary Midnapore and Shadow Minister for Treasury Board released the following statement in response to today’s emergency meeting on the Liberal government’s relationship with McKinsey & Company:

“Today the Conservative members of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates led the charge to pass a motion for documents and witnesses. Canadians deserve to know why the Liberal Government has spent $101.4 million in contracts with McKinsey & Company, a fiftyfold increase since 2015. This is a crucial first step in getting those answers.

“At a time when Canadians are struggling to cope with 40-year highs in inflation and the rising cost-of-living, $101.4 million of their hard-earned tax dollars have gone straight into the pockets of well-connected Liberal insiders. While the cost of a mortgage payment is now a bigger portion of a paycheque than ever before and 1.5 million Canadians are visiting food banks in a single month, Liberal insiders have never had it so good.”

“What we know so far is that much of the work McKinsey & Company has done for this government has shown absolutely no outcomes. Millions in contracts from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada were given to McKinsey & Company and and yet we have a 2 million plus immigration backlog with over a million waiting beyond the acceptable legal timeframe.

“McKinsey & Company also has a reputation around the world for flouting ethical and moral lines. They are currently under investigation in France over campaign financing. They have ties to authoritarian regimes. They’ve paid hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements in the United States over their role in the opioid epidemic.

“We need to put an end to this wasteful and inflationary spending and stop giving money to well-connected insiders. We will work to get the answers Canadians deserve, including where this money is going and influence this company has on our government. We will put Canadians back in control of their lives and back in control of their government.”
