Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Bandi Chhor Divas:
“Today, we recognize the incredible legacy of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, a leader who understood freedom is only freedom when it is shared by all.
“More than four centuries ago, Guru Sahib, imprisoned in Gwalior Fort, refused to be freed unless every inmate could share in it.
“He brought fifty-two fellow prisoners out of the Fort, who clutched onto the hems of his cloak. This courageous and selfless act earned him the name Bandi Chhor or the ‘Liberator’.
“On this Bandi Chhor Divas, Sikh communities across Canada come together, sharing langar and gathering in the spirit of freedom that makes Canada stronger.
“Happy Bandi Chhor Divas!”
