Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Franco-Ontarian Day:
“Today marks the 51st anniversary of the first raising of the Franco-Ontarian flag at the University of Sudbury. Featuring the fleur-de-lys – a symbol of French Canadians for generations – and the trillium, Ontario’s emblem, this flag reflects the history, pride, and identity of Franco-Ontarians.
“For more than four centuries, Francophones have contributed to the development of what is now Ontario. Their language, culture, and traditions continue to enrich the province’s communities.
“The rights of Franco-Ontarians have been severely tested throughout history, particularly with Regulation 17, which sought to ban French-language education. Thanks to their determination and perseverance, they have successfully defended their language and passed this heritage on to future generations.
“Today, more than 1.5 million French-speaking Ontarians celebrate their history, culture, and language. Their commitment to their French identity helps keep our country’s founding language alive.
“Conservatives will continue to work to protect and promote French across Canada.
“Happy Franco-Ontarian Day to all Francophones in Ontario!”
