Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Armenian Independence Day:
“Today, Armenians across the world celebrate Armenian Independence Day: a nation that, as its anthem proclaims, ‘has for centuries lived.’ Through hardship, exile, persecution and the Medz Yeghern, the Armenian people have endured, preserving their proud identity.
“On September 21, 1991, the Armenian people overwhelmingly voted to restore their independence. Decades later, as the tricolour flag continues to wave in the air, Armenians will gather to celebrate. Duduk’s ancient melody will fill the air, as folk dancers link arms for kochari and families sit around tables plated with khorovats and lavash and take part in church ceremonies.
“More than just remembering a date, today celebrates a people whose culture has remained unbroken, even through the greatest of trials.
“Our country is proud to be home to over 65,000 Canadians of Armenian heritage. Today, we join in celebrating a vibrant and resilient people whose enduring faith and commitment to freedom continue to leave a lasting mark on our communities.
“Happy Armenian Independence Day!”
