Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on the Anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw:

“Through more than a century of partition, the Polish spirit endured, and Poland was reborn. By 1920, with the Red Army closing in on Warsaw, many believed that this proud nation would disappear once again.

“But Poland did not fall. Determined to defend their independence, the Polish army launched a counterattack, forcing the Soviets to retreat. It is through their heroic efforts that the spread of communism was stopped at Warsaw’s gates from spreading over Europe.

“Today, alongside nearly a million Canadians of Polish heritage, we remember the Battle of Warsaw. And we also honour the courage of this incredible people, including the thousands killed in that fateful battle, and the many more wounded in action defending the cause of freedom.

“Canada and Poland alike have endured because brave people rose to defend them. As we mark this anniversary, let us be reminded of the importance, as the Polish people were then, of standing up for the values that unite us.”
