Ottawa, ON – Aaron Gunn, Conservative Shadow Minister for Ethics and Accountable Government, released the following statement on the Ethics Committee’s forthcoming meeting on Prime Minister Carney’s condo bailout:
“After a decade of Liberal inflation and mismanagement, too many young Canadians cannot even dream of owning a home. Despite promising to build at record speeds, Mark Carney has given Canada the second-slowest housing approvals in the OECD. Instead of getting out of the way to bring the affordability Canadians’ need, the Prime Minister has now stepped in with a taxpayer-funded bailout for industry insiders.
“Tomorrow, the Ethics Committee will meet to consider an investigation into this scandal. Will Liberal MPs stand on the side of transparency and accountability? Or will this be another Liberal coverup?
“If the government wants to privatize the profits for bankers and developers while socializing their losses at taxpayer expense, Canadians have a right to know who exactly is benefitting and why this decision has been made.
“BC residents need real results to increase construction and bring down the fees and charges that have delivered housing prices 50 per cent higher than when the Liberals took office. Even outside Vancouver, those looking to own a home now need to earn at least $185,500 to afford a home in Victoria, as housing prices increased another $1,800 from April to May of this year.
“Instead, we see more carveouts and handouts for members of the Liberal club, with the government buying up unsold units rather than allowing them to be sold on the open market for a lower price.
“Now, the committee will have a chance to call key witnesses, demand documents, and get the answers Canadians need about who stands to gain from the Prime Minister’s decision.
“Liberals on the committee will have an opportunity to bring much-needed oversight and accountability, or they can provide more useful votes for Mark Carney. The choice is theirs.
“No matter what, we will continue fighting to make homeownership affordable once again by taking the GST off all new homes under $1.3 million, increasing transparency around building code updates and making Canada the fastest place on earth to get a permit.
“Conservatives want a country with homes families can afford and government they can trust.”
