Ottawa, ON – Jasraj Singh Hallan, Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance, issued the following statement after Conservatives revealed Carney’s nearly $1 million in-flight catering bill:
“After 11 years of the Liberals, life has never been more expensive, and Canadians are paying the price. Carney promised to make life more affordable, but he’s delivered the only G20 country in a recession and falling GDP for three of the four quarters he’s been in office.
“While families face higher prices at the checkout and the gas pump, and workers stare at empty fridges and bank accounts, Carney has stocked his jet with nearly $1 million in in-flight catering since taking office. Despite not negotiating a single new trade agreement across 14 international trips, taxpayers were still charged $962,633.24 in Carney’s first year alone.
“That’s enough to feed a family of four for almost 55 years after the annual grocery bill rose to $17,600 this year. As Canadians are squeezing every dollar and one-fourth are now food insecure, Carney spent $500 on “Luxury Normandy Butter Cups,” and the in-flight catering for his trip to Rome last May cost nearly double that of his predecessor.
“Meanwhile, 60 per cent of Canadians now report being gripped with anxiety over their finances, a five point increase in the last six months, according to United Way. 40 per cent report feeling difficulty sleeping from financial stress while 20 per cent now say that over the last six months, all the food in their home was eaten and they didn’t have enough money to buy more.
“No wonder Daily Bread Food Bank reports that one-tenth of Torontonians are now clients, with 2.2 million visits across Canada in a single month – the highest usage in history and double what it was in 2019.
“As Carney spends tens of thousands on luxury catering, Canadians are left with the real cost of his recession: families with empty grocery baskets and stomachs, and workers with empty fridges and bank accounts.
“Only Conservatives will lower the cost of government to lower the cost of living and restore a country that is affordable at home, strong at home and growing at home.”
