Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on the anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident:
“In May of 1914, 376 South Asians from Sikh, Hindu and Muslim faiths arrived in Vancouver on the SS Komagata Maru. They sought a fair chance and a better future, a future built on freedom to build a life through honest effort. The passengers were refused entry and sent back home, where many were imprisoned and killed.
“More than a century later, this nation is home to a strong, proud and thriving community of South Asian heritage. Their success reflects what is possible in this country.
“Conservatives believe in a Canada where Canadians of every background, of every generation, can create a great life for themselves and their families through hard work and opportunity.
“Together, learning the lessons of our past, may we all continue to build a brighter Canada equal under one law, united by one flag and bound by one promise.”
