Ottawa, ON –The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Victory in Europe Day:

“It is hard for us to imagine how our grandparents and great-grandparents must have felt that day. Late on the night of May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered and the European war was finally at a close.

“It was the defeat of a genocidal ideology that, together with its allies and collaborators, sought to destroy entire nations and wipe whole countries from the map. And, while fighting continued in the Pacific, it was a sign that the end of this globe-spanning conflict was finally in sight.

“Over 42,000 Canadians gave their lives for King and country in the Second World War. The sacrifices of our sailors, soldiers and aviators not only liberated millions from fascist tyranny, but built and deepened ties to Western Europe that last to this day.

“As we remember the courage and tenacity of the Greatest Generation, we salute our incredible veterans and their families as they mark this day.”
