Ottawa, ON – Today, the Hon. Michelle Rempel Garner, Conservative Shadow Minister for Immigration, released the following statement following recent Immigration Refugee Board testimony and a subsequent Conservative motion to ensure that Iranian regime officials are deported from Canada:

“Today, the government confirmed that Iranian regime officials have been found living in Canada. Some have even made asylum claims. All while Liberal appointees at the Immigration Refugee Board, low enforcement capacity and failures to update the law mean that these individuals are both choosing Canada as a destination and avoiding deportation once here.

“At a time when Canadians of Iranian heritage have grave concerns about the government’s ability to keep them safe from foreign interference, the Liberals must take immediate action to prevent agents of the Islamic Republic from entering Canada – and deporting those who have already arrived.

“That’s why Conservatives have given notice of motion at the Immigration Committee calling on the government to:

  • Urgently enforce deportation orders for non-citizen regime officials;
  • Review and update the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to:
    • Clearly ensure non-citizens are deemed inadmissible if involved in regime-linked businesses, spreading propaganda, or human rights abuses;
    • Extend inadmissibility to immediate non-citizen family members of regime officials;
    • Create an exemption from non-refoulement protections for inadmissible non-citizen regime officials proven to be complicit in human rights abuses.
  • Release the name of the alleged non-citizen regime official mentioned in the February 6, 2026 Global News article, and explain in writing to the Committee why it prohibited the media from publishing his name;
  • Table a report to Parliament explaining why it has not publicly disclosed the identities of known non-citizen Iranian regime officials or agents in Canada; and
  • Stop approving any refugee claims from countries with governments hostile to Canada unless an in-person interview is conducted first.

“The Iranian regime murdered innocent Canadians and is guilty of heinous human rights abuses, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has been designated a terrorist organization in Canada. Such individuals should be deported, not given endless opportunities to stay.”
