Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Oxi Day:

“Eighty-five years ago, the Greek nation gave an answer that echoed through history. Like the Spartans at Thermopylae, they rebuffed the ultimatum of an ignoble enemy – refusing to surrender their freedom without a fight.

“Today, we remember the suffering and the valour of the Greek people in the Second World War. We reflect on the inspiring example of heroes like Archbishop Damaskinos of Athens, who refused to cede Greece’s dignity to occupying powers.

“Whether in 1940 or 1821, Hellenes have always stood ready to fight for faith, family and freedom. That same indomitable spirit has made Canada’s community of Greek heritage the incredible success that it is.

“May these stories of courage in the face of overwhelming odds be an inspiration to us all. On behalf of my colleagues, I want to wish all those celebrating a happy Oxi Day!”
