Member of Parliament
Blaine was born and raised on his family farm near Lacombe, Alberta. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. As well, Blaine holds a certificate in Law Enforcement from Lethbridge Community College and a Diploma in Computer Systems Technology from Red Deer College.
Blaine worked as a Fisheries Technician for Alberta Fish and Wildlife; a Provincial Park Ranger; and a National Park Warden in Jasper National Park. He later became a database administrator at the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation in Lacombe, Alberta. Blaine was also a tenured faculty member at Red Deer College where he taught Computer Systems Technology.
Active in his community, Blaine was an elected Municipal Councillor for the Town of Lacombe. He served as a Director of the Lacombe Municipal Ambulance Society; the Family and Community Support Services; the Municipal Planning Commission; the David Thompson Tourist Council; and the Disaster Services Committee.
First elected as the Member of Parliament for the Constituency of Wetaskiwin in 2006, Blaine captured over 75 percent of the votes cast and was re-elected in the October 2008 General Election again winning over 77 percent of the vote. Blaine was re-elected in 2011, this time garnering 81.5% of the vote – the 2nd highest percentage in Canada.
He has served on the following House of Commons Standing Committees; National Defence, Justice and Human Rights, Government Operations, Standing Committees of Fisheries and Oceans and Environment and Sustainable Development. and was the Vice Chair of the Standing Joint Committee of the Library of Parliament. Blaine is currently serving as a Member on the Standing Committees of Ethics and Access to Information and Natural Resources. In addition to his committee roles, Blaine also serves as the Chair of the Alberta Regional Caucus.
Blaine is Chair of the Canada-Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group and an executive member of both the NATO Parliamentary Association and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. He is active in the following Conservative Party of Canada Caucuses; the Agriculture and Rural Caucus; Energy Caucus; Grains and Oilseed Caucus; and the Joint Outdoor Caucus.
An avid outdoorsman, Blaine enjoys camping, hiking, fishing, golfing, hunting, hockey and playing guitar.
Blaine and his wife Barbara have three children.
