Member of Parliament
Born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver, Wai Young is honoured to represent the people of Vancouver South as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada. Before her election, Wai worked for both provincial and federal governments, as well as an entrepreneur and activist working to strengthen communities by developing social policies and programs in Vancouver and across Canada. Highlights of her work include: immigrant settlement programs and services; business improvement; youth-at-risk initiatives; foster-parent training; international student safety; and more.
Wai has a deep passion for building communities. A small-business owner, Wai operated her own consulting business. Her diverse clientele included all three levels of government, businesses, and various non-profit community groups, giving her unique experience and insight into these large, diverse, and interrelated sectors. Prior to consulting, Wai worked and volunteered in Vancouver communities, including the Downtown Eastside, where she served as a counselor and child care worker, founded and chaired Canada’s first Youth-At-Risk Task Force (leading to Youth Prevention and Anti-Gang initiatives), and established Canada’s longest-running breakfast program for underprivileged children.
As a lifelong volunteer, Wai has been a Big Sister to special needs youth, served as the President of the Strathcona Community Centre Association, and as a Director of YWCA Vancouver and the Mennonite Central Committee of B.C. She has also founded and chaired numerous committees and groups to address and find solutions to local and national issues.
Wai is a graduate of Killarney Secondary School and the University of British Columbia, where she obtained a degree in Sociology. She is a mother of twins and has been a foster mother for seven foster children.
Elected to the House of Commons in 2011, Wai is honoured to serve in various roles, including:
- Vice-Chair of the BC / Yukon Conservative Caucus
- Vice-Chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association
- Member of the Standing Committee for Status of Women
- Member of the Committee of the Library of Parliament
- Served on the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security
- Inter-Parliamentary Committee memberships include China, India, US, Taiwan, Japan, etc.
Wai’s contribution and service demonstrates her passion for building our nation. Together with Prime Minister Harper and the Conservative Team, she is working hard to strengthen our economy, lessen taxes for Canadian families, and stand up for victims and the vulnerable – to build a stronger future for Canada.
