Lévis – Bellechasse
Steven Blaney was born in Sherbrooke and grew up in Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce. He now lives in Lévis with his wife, Marie Bouchard, and his two children, William-Antoine, and Alexandra. Steven graduated from the University of Sherbrooke, becoming a civil engineer in 1988. In 2002, he completed his MBA in Lévis.
After his studies, he worked as a consultant, entrepreneur, and advisor in the fields of urban infrastructure and environmental technology. Steven was an active member of the largest group of environmental professionals in Canada, Réseau Environnement, and served as the president of its Québec-Chaudière-Appalaches chapter from 2003 to 2006.
Elected to the House of Commons for the first time in 2006, he was re-elected in 2008 and again in 2011 as the MP for Lévis-Bellechasse. Soon after becoming an MP, he was appointed Vice-Chair of the Quebec Conservative Caucus. In October 2008, he was appointed Chair. He sat on the Aboriginal Affairs Committee and the Transport, Infrastructure, and Communities Committee. Steven also joined the Defence Committee to help with the Afghanistan mission and participated in a visit to Kandahar in January 2006. On May 31, 2007, Steven became Chair of the Standing Committee on Official Languages, which strives to promote linguistic duality across Canada. He was also a member of the Canada-France Interparliamentary Association.
On May 18, 2011, Steven was appointed by Prime Minister Steven Harper to serve as Minister of Veterans Affairs. This department offers services that respond to the needs of veterans and their families in recognition of their services to Canada and to keep alive the memory of their achievements and sacrifices for all Canadians. On February 22, 2013, while keeping his position of Veterans Affairs Minister, Steven Blaney received an additional responsibility becoming Minister for La Francophonie. Steven wants to contribute to lasting prosperity in Lévis, Bellechasse and Les Etchemins. He is proud to represent such a diverse and dynamic riding, and pledges to serve the people of Quebec with passion.
