Stop Online Fraud
Whereas online fraud is rising at an alarming rate, with Canadians losing more than $642 million to fraud in 2024 alone;
Whereas scammers increasingly use social media, online platforms, artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and other sophisticated technologies to target unsuspecting Canadians, particularly seniors;
Whereas online platforms benefit from user engagement and should be responsible for taking reasonable steps to prevent, remove, and report fraudulent content that harms Canadians;
Whereas current laws do not adequately reflect the serious and predatory nature of online scams, leaving vulnerable Canadians exposed to financial and emotional harm.
Therefore, we the undersigned call on the Carney Liberals to support the Conservative bill, Protection Against Online Fraud Act, to hold big tech companies accountable, require platforms to combat fraudulent content, strengthen protections for users, and ensure tougher consequences for online scammers who prey on Canadians.
