Protect Victims, Not Abusers: Pass Bill C-225
Whereas intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most significant form of violence against women in Canada and is vastly underreported;
Whereas victims of IPV are often trapped in a cycle of violence marked by economic and emotional dependence, and children who witness such abuse suffer lasting trauma;
Whereas according to Statistics Canada, 60 percent of all violent crimes occur between intimate partners, and IPV accounts for nearly one third of all violent crimes reported to police;
Whereas our current laws are inadequate to address the seriousness of this unique and insidious crime, which turns homes—places meant to be safe—into prisons of repeated victimization;
Therefore, we the undersigned call upon the Liberal government to support Conservative Bill C-225 without delay to protect victims, hold abusers accountable, and ensure that Canada’s justice system finally reflects the seriousness of intimate partner violence.
