No Mandatory Digital ID

WHEREAS Budget 2025 affirms the federal government’s agenda for “digital transformation,” including experimental digital-credential systems that may influence Canadians’ access to essential benefits.

WHEREAS the Liberal government has repeatedly been caught quietly looking into ways to bring forward various forms of a digital ID.

WHEREAS digital ID would permit the government to collect, store, and share the personal data of Canadians across government agencies, as well as potentially with foreign or private-sector players.

WHEREAS digital identification systems, if not strictly voluntary, can increase surveillance, profiling, reduce privacy, and centralize personal data.

WHEREAS Canadians still lack clear, permanent protections ensuring they can access government services through in-person, mail, or telephone options without being compelled to use a digital ID.

WHEREAS the Liberal government has previously infringed upon the privacy and freedoms of Canadians, with intrusive tracking and surveillance activities without sufficient oversight and accountability.

WHEREAS the Liberal government has put forward border security and cybersecurity legislation that further expands government authority, putting the digital privacy and freedoms of ordinary Canadians at greater risk.

WHEREAS repeated federal failures to protect the data of Canadians suggest a national digital ID system would further expose Canadians to breaches, fraud, and identity theft.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the undersigned, support the Conservatives in opposing a mandatory digital ID for Canadians and in upholding the intrinsic rights of Canadians to privacy, autonomy, and dignity in a free and democratic society.
