Increase Penalties for Criminals Who Vandalize Places of Worship
Whereas over the past ten years, there has been a significant rise in hate-motivated mischief incidents targeting property used by identifiable groups in Canada, increasing from 66 incidents in 2015 to 277 in 2024;
Whereas the cost of vandalism to places of worship is currently borne by victims, leaving worshippers to shoulder the financial burden of repairing damages;
Whereas mischief directed at places of worship is more than simple vandalism, as it creates fear among communities and disrupts the free practice of faith;
Whereas similar measures already exist in the Criminal Code for vandalism of war memorials, recognizing the unique importance of such sites;
Therefore, we, the undersigned, petition the House of Commons to support Conservative Bill C-255 to ensure offenders are held financially responsible and that victims of mischief directed at places of worship receive mandatory compensation.
