Healthcare Benefits for Canadians First
Whereas the cost of the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) has more than quadrupled in the last four years, rising from $211 million to $896 million, and is expected to grow to $1.5 billion a year by 2030;
Whereas this program provides some non-citizens with rejected asylum claims access to supplementary health benefits, including vision care, which many Canadian citizens do not receive, free of charge;
Whereas Canadians who have paid into our healthcare system their entire lives are struggling to access timely care, in part because limited resources are being diverted to failed asylum claimants;
And whereas Canadians deserve transparency, fairness, and responsible stewardship of public healthcare spending;
Therefore be it resolved that the undersigned call on the Liberal government to review federal benefits provided to asylum claimants into order to find savings for taxpayers, restrict health benefits for rejected asylum claimants to emergency life-saving care only, and immediately remove non-citizens convicted of serious crimes.
