Cut the Tax on Used Cars

Whereas used vehicle prices in Canada have nearly doubled since 2019, making vehicle ownership increasingly unaffordable for many Canadians;

Whereas lower- and middle-income Canadians, particularly younger Canadians and working families, are most likely to rely on the used vehicle market and are being disproportionately affected by rising costs;

Whereas Canadians are unfairly paying federal sale tax every time a used vehicle is sold through a dealership, despite federal sales tax already having been paid when the vehicle was first purchased new;

Whereas removing the GST on used vehicle sales would save Canadians between $1,845 and $5,535 on a typical used vehicle purchase;

Whereas affordable transportation is a necessity for many Canadians, especially in rural and remote communities.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, call on the Carney Liberals to support Conservative Bill C-285 to remove federal sales tax from used vehicles, ending the unfair practice of taxing the same vehicle over and over again, and put thousands of dollars back in the pockets of Canadians struggling with the rising cost of living.
