Protect Property Rights

Whereas fee-simple property ownership underpins home ownership, economic stability, and retirement security for Canadians;

Whereas in November 2018, the Government of Canada directed federal lawyers to abandon the defence of fee-simple title in the Cowichan land claim case, leaving the City of Richmond to defend property rights alone;

Whereas this decision and subsequent ruling have created uncertainty for homeowners, businesses, and taxpayers, threatening land title security across Canada.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, call on the Government of Canada to withdraw the 2018 directive, reinstate the defence of fee-simple property rights in all land claim cases, publicly reaffirm its commitment to private property rights, and protect municipalities and taxpayers from undue legal and financial burdens.
