Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Erin O’Toole, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, and James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence, issued a statement following news that the United States has moved to sanction seventeen individuals for their roles in the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act:

“Today, the United States took steps to sanction individuals involved in the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. Justin Trudeau has the power to do the same under the Magnitsky Law that was introduced by the Conservatives. The Liberal government should move on this immediately alongside our allies.

“As a global leader on human rights, we have a duty to act swiftly to condemn barbaric acts against journalists, human rights activists and dissidents.

“Canada and its allies must do their part to ensure these individuals face serious repercussions for their actions, and to send a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated by the international community.

“It is imperative that Justin Trudeau act to ensure those responsible for the death of Jamal Khashoggi be held accountable. Canada’s Conservatives are calling on the Prime Minister to act swiftly to ensure these individuals are held to account for their crimes.”
