The Hon. Rona Ambrose, the Leader of the Official Opposition, issues statement to mark Vaisakhi Ottawa – April 13, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Rona Ambrose, issued the following statement to mark Vaisakhi: “Today, Sikhs will join friends and family as they gather to celebrate Vaisakhi and to commemorate the founding of Khalsa, the Sikh community, established in 1699 by their 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. “As family and friends will gather at Gurdwaras to read from sacred scriptures and meditate, this holiday will bring together Sikhs and non-Sikhs in Canada and around the world, in the spirit of unity. “The community will gather to participate and watch the vibrant and colourful processions known as Nagar Kirtans. “Sikhs take pride in being compassionate and generous, and are strong advocates of Seva, which relates to selfless service and volunteering for the less unfortunate. “With values like these, it is easy to understand how the Sikh community in Canada has contributed to the rich diversity and history of our country for over 100 years. I encourage all Canadians to use this occasion as an opportunity to learn about the immense contributions that Sikhs have made to our great country. “On behalf of the Official Opposition and Conservative Party of Canada, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to the Sikh community in Canada and around the world as we celebrate Vaisakhi. ““Vaisakhi di lakh lakh vadhai!” -30- For more information: Anthony Farrow (613) 292-2187 [email protected] Mike Storeshaw (613) 222-7484 [email protected]
