FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on Rosh Hashanah:

“This evening, at sundown, Jewish people in Canada and around the world will mark the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and the start of the High Holy Days.

“Celebrated on the first two days of the month of Tishrei, Rosh Hashanah is an opportunity for families and friends to get together and reflect on their actions over the past year, seek peace and forgiveness, and hope for a prosperous year ahead. This year, due to health measures put in place because of the pandemic, the celebrations will look different. Families will have to find unique and creative ways to celebrate the holiday, as they share meals with sweet challah and apple slices dipped in honey.

“Rosh Hashanah also presents an opportunity to celebrate the role Canadian Jews have played for generations in building our country, enriching our culture and standing up for the fundamental rights. Sadly, the Jewish community in Canada remains the most targeted group for hate crimes. We will never shy away and stop fighting against antisemitism and other forms of discrimination in Canada.

“On behalf of the Official Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I want to wish everyone celebrating a joyous and sweet Rosh Hashanah. May the New Year be filled with peace, good health and prosperity.

“Shana tova u’metuka.”
