OTTAWA, ON – The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, the Hon. Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement on the 102nd Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge:

“On the 102nd anniversary of the Canadian victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge we pause to celebrate and honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought and won this most important battle.

“The beach was an open graveyard on April 9th 1917. One hundred thousand allies had fallen before our boys even began their assault on the ridge. War is often referred to as a horror, but I doubt if even that word can encompass the hell on earth they had to navigate that day.

“But side by side, as one, they fought. As their brothers fell beside them they kept going. And before the day was over, the job was done and the most pivotal battle of the Great War had been won, contributing to Canadians’ reputation as the Shock Troops of the Empire.

“It is often said that Canada became a nation on that day. But it was not without a heavy cost. Over 10,000 Canadian men lay dead and wounded. We will always remember the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought valiantly for our country.”

“Canada’s Conservatives are committed to building a country that honours their pursuit of freedom, peace and reflects their unity. May we never forget their sacrifice as we proudly honour all Veterans, past and present, and the brave men and women who keep our country safe each and every day.”
