OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement:
“Today, I am pleased to extend my best wishes to everyone in Canada and around the world celebrating the 75th anniversary of Korea’s independence. On this occasion we also celebrate the special friendship we enjoy with the Republic of Korea and recognize the immense contributions of Korean-Canadians to our society and our country.
“Also known as the ‘Gwangbokjeol’ or ‘National Liberation Day of Korea,’ this occasion serves as a day of reflection on South Korea’s achievements and the role Canadians, like Dr. Frank Schofield, played in the March 1st Independence movement of 1919, and those who served and sacrificed their lives during the Korean War, 70 years ago. Over 26,000 Canadians served during the Korean War. Between 1950 and 1953, over 516 brave Canadian soldiers gave their lives, and thousands were wounded fighting for freedom against communist imperialism. More than 7,000 Canadian soldiers also served in the ongoing peace-keeping duties after the signing of the Armistice.
“Canada is home to a vibrant Korean community from coast to coast. We are proud that the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement implemented by our Conservative government in January 2015, strengthened our friendship with South Korea and contributed to the creation of new and strengthened economic opportunities for both nations.
“On behalf of the Canada’s Conservatives, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to everyone celebrating the 75th anniversary of South Korea’s independence.
“Happy National Liberation Day of Korea!”
