OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement to mark India Independence Day:

“Today, Indo-Canadians and Indians around the world are celebrating the 74th anniversary of India’s Independence.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s celebrations will largely take place online. However, I hope that Canada’s vibrant Indo-Canadian communities from coast to coast are still able to celebrate India’s achievements and the many contributions of Indo-Canadians to the social, cultural and economic fabric of our nation.

“Canada and India share a longstanding friendship and partnership built on respect, shared values, and close bilateral ties. Canada is home to over a million Indo-Canadians who have for generations contributed tremendously to Canada’s success and prosperity.

“During the pandemic, we have all witnessed the resilience and unity of the Indo-Canadian community. You have opened up Mandirs and Gurdwaras to prepare food, collect clothing and distribute care packages to those in need. Thank you for your generosity and compassion.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I extend my best wishes to all those celebrating India’s Independence Day!”
