FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on Vaisakhi:
“Today marks Vaisakhi, the holiest and most significant day for people of the Sikh faith.
“Traditionally during this holiday, friends and family would gather at their local Gurdwaras and participate in one of many Nagar Kirtan processions that take place across Canada and around the world. However, due to the current coronavirus pandemic, celebrations will look different this year. I hope that every Sikh family participating in this rich tradition will be able to connect with their loved ones through other means to mark this important occasion.
“In April, we also mark Sikh Heritage Month. Canada is proud to be home to one of the largest and most active Sikh communities in the world. Your compassion and generosity is once again being demonstrated during this pandemic as Gurdwaras across Canada deliver food and necessities to those in need. Thank you for looking out for your friends and neighbours.
“A few weeks ago, I was greatly saddened to hear about an ISIS terrorist attack that killed twenty-five Sikh worshipers, including children, during prayers in a Gurdwara in Kabul. Canada’s Conservatives will always condemn such heinous attacks and speak out against atrocious actions against faith communities around the world. All individuals should be able to worship and live their lives of faith without fear. Conservatives will continue to stand up for freedom of religion at home and abroad.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I extend my best wishes to all Sikhs in Canada and around the world celebrating Vaisakhi and Sikh Heritage Month!”
“Vaisakhi diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan!”
