FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on the occasion of Tisha B’Av:
“This evening at sundown, Jewish Canadians will join the global Jewish community to mark the beginning of Tisha’ B’Av, an annual day of fasting and remembrance.
“The observance of Tisha B’Av is a commemoration of the many disasters and calamities endured by the Jewish people, specifically recalling the destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, and the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 CE.
“Also known as the saddest date in the Jewish calendar, Tisha B’Av serves as a reminder to all of how blessed we are to live in Canada. Many people of faith around the world are still actively persecuted for their beliefs. The pernicious evil of antisemitism is still all too prevalent, even here in Canada. May this Tisha B’Av reaffirm our commitment to combat antisemitism and stand up for freedom of religion at home and around the world.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I extend my best wishes to the Jewish community in Canada and around the world observing this solemn and sacred day.”
