FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:

“Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination – a day to recognize the sacrifice and appreciate progress that those fighting discrimination in all its forms have made throughout the years, while continuing to work to end the racial discrimination that still exists today.

“Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination – a day to recognize the sacrifice and appreciate progress that those fighting discrimination in all its forms have made throughout the years, while continuing to work to end the racial discrimination that still exists today.

“Canada is an example to the world of how the strength of a free society can draw people of every race, language and religion, creating an even stronger nation than ever before.

“I am grateful for the brave men and women who have stood up throughout our history and called for rights and freedom for all. From Josiah Henson, who escaped slavery to become a thriving businessman in Ontario, to Viola Desmond, who challenged segregation in Nova Scotia, to the Hon. Lincoln Alexander, who worked tirelessly to end racial discrimination, we are a better, freer, and stronger nation today because of those who have fought discrimination and injustice in the past.

“May each and every one of us be inspired to continue to speak out against racism and hatred in all its forms and spur one another on to a greater unity as we respect the freedom and rights that every human deserves.

“On behalf of the Official Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I encourage all Canadians to commit to building a nation and a world free of racial discrimination.”
