FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, today issued the following statement on Assumption Day:
“Today, Catholic and Orthodox Christians around the world will celebrate the Feast of the Dormition and Assumption of the Mother of God.
“Known in the West as the Assumption and in the Eastern traditions as the Dormition, this feast day marks the end of the earthly life of St. Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus, and her assumption body and soul into Heaven.
“While the famous dogmatic declaration of Pope Pius XII in 1950 focussed on her bodily assumption, the centuries-old belief in both the Eastern and Western traditions is that Mary followed her Son’s path and experienced his redemptive power through death and resurrection before her entrance into Heaven. This feast day is thus an inspiration and a sign of hope for believers who look forward to their own part in the resurrection of the dead.
“Today’s celebrations usually include high masses and divine liturgies. This year, due to the ongoing pandemic, these celebrations may look different. But I hope that Orthodox, Catholics, and all Christians are still able to mark these celebrations of faith with their families through moments of joyful prayer and feasting.
“Our country is blessed to be home to an incredibly diverse array of Christian traditions. Today is an opportunity to reflect on their many contributions to Canadian society and to focus on the unity in that diversity.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I wish a happy feast day to all those celebrating!”
