Influenced by his father who worked 30 years at the Montreal Police Service, Jean-Guy Dagenais worked as a police officer from 1972 to 2011 at the Sûreté du Québec. He has held a variety of positions, including patrol, patrol-investigator, team leader and police-educator in schools. He also worked for the communications department and was assigned to personalities services.
His involvement with the Quebec Provincial Police Association began in 1984. He was successively a steward, regional director and vice-president of finance. He was elected president in 2004.
Mr. Dagenais was a guest speaker at the Quebec Federation of Municipalities Convention and participated in several public safety committees. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the National Police Academy and the Board of Directors of the Canadian Police Association. He was made Officer of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, which rewards the citizens who have marked the evolution of Quebec or who have allowed its influence in various sectors.
During the 2011 general election, Mr. Dagenais ran as a Conservative candidate for the riding of Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot.
He has been married to Danielle Comeau for more than 40 years.
