Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Day of Dignity and Freedom:

“Today is the Day of Dignity and Freedom – a day where Ukrainian patriots honour their history of defending liberty and celebrate the binding national events that have rooted their love of democracy.

“In 2004, Ukrainians refused to allow political corruption to deprive them of their democratic voice. As a country, they rejected the widespread election fraud that sought to entrench a government that did not reflect the will of the people. Through peaceful protests, Ukrainians successfully overturned the election results, and won a resounding victory for their democracy with the election of President Victor Yushchenko.

“Years later, in 2013, a new government under Russia’s influence, attempted to thwart the will of elected representatives by backing out of an international agreement that would bring Ukraine closer to its European allies. But again, Ukrainians would not allow these corrupt voices to overrule them. Once more, they raised their voices in protest, demanding that their leaders honour the will of the people and of their elected representatives.

“Sadly, many people – the Heavenly Hundred – lost their lives standing up for their rights, but their sacrifices were not in vain. The Revolution of Dignity and the Heavenly Hundred ultimately won the day for Ukrainian democracy and further emboldened a passion for freedom that burns in the hearts of millions of Ukrainians.

“Today, this heritage of freedom has strengthened Ukrainians in their defence against Russia’s renewed attempts to force them into submission. Their history has prepared them to repel this tyranny, and fiercely defend their country. Today, I encourage all Canadians to show their continued support for Ukrainians who continue to fight in defence of democracy, as they seek to preserve their freedom and dignity.

“Slava Ukraini!”
