Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, released the following statement on the National Liberation Day of Korea:

“Today, I would like to extend my best wishes to Korean Canadians and Koreans around the world who are celebrating the 76th anniversary of Korea’s independence! This is an opportunity for us all to celebrate the great friendship between our two nations, and the immense contributions of Korean Canadians to our country.

“This day that is also known as the National Liberation Day of Korea, or ‘Gwangbokjeol’, is a chance to reflect upon the achievements of South Korea, as well as the role many Canadians played in the Korean War. Over 26,000 Canadians served during this war over 70 years ago, and 516 gave their lives fighting for freedom against communist imperialism. There were also thousands more wounded, and countless others affected by these actions.

“Canada is proud to call itself home to a wonderful Korean community. We are also proud of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement implemented by our previous Conservative government, which helped strengthen the bond and expand economic opportunities between our nations.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I wish Korean Canadians and all those who are celebrating a happy National Liberation Day of Korea!”
