Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, released the following statement on the Feast of the Assumption:

“Today, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In some Eastern Churches, this day is also known as the Dormition of the Mother of God.

“This feast day marks the end of the earthly life of Mary, the Mother of God, and the assumption of her body and soul into Heaven.

“It was in 1950 that Pope Pius XII defined this centuries-old belief as a dogmatic teaching of the Catholic Church. This day is one of immense celebration internationally, as Christians mark the occasion with prayer, festivities, and feasting.

“Canada is blessed to be home to a vast diversity of Christian traditions and backgrounds, and I hope that all Canadians may take the time to reflect on how this diversity can lead to a beautiful unity.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I wish a happy Feast of the Assumption to all those who are celebrating!”
