OTTAWA – Tony Clement, Official Opposition Foreign Affairs Critic, made the following statement today in response to a terror attack in Istanbul, Turkey: “Today, once again, the world mourns more innocent victims of terrorism. “We condemn in the strongest terms the savagery that has killed at least 10 people in Istanbul, a toll that includes tourists enjoying the sights and sounds of one of the world’s great historic cities. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Turkish people as well as of those families and friends of all those from a number of countries who were killed or wounded in the attack. “Canada has a long and distinguished tradition of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our friends and allies. We must remain a strong and reliable partner in the struggle against global terrorism, in particular the conflict in Syria and Iraq. “Canadians from coast to coast to coast are proud of the work our brave men and women in uniform are doing to help combat this scourge and to protect Canada and our allies from such cruel and brutal violence. “Heinous crimes like today’s suicide bombing must not blunt our conviction in this vital task – they must sharpen our resolve to see it through. “Once again we call on the government of Canada to remain true to our proud and courageous history and step up, not back, from the fight against global terrorism, the great international challenge of our times.”
