OTTAWA — Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition and interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, made the following statement today on the passing of former Alberta Premier Don Getty: “I was saddened to learn this morning of the passing of former Alberta Premier Don Getty. “Mr. Getty was a fiercely proud Albertan and Canadian, with a remarkable ability to reconcile a strong voice on behalf of his home province with the best interests of the country as a whole. “He was a true servant of the public and a democrat, and will be fondly remembered for creating the first and still the only process in Canada through which citizens could elect Senators. “Mr. Getty’s life outside politics was equally extraordinary, as both a successful businessperson and a legendary Canadian Football League player and Grey Cup Champion with the Edmonton Eskimos. His personal warmth and strength of character garnered respect and admiration from people from all walks of life, and of all political stripes. For these reasons and many more, he will be truly missed. “On behalf of the Official Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I offer my deepest condolences to Mr. Getty’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
