Statement by the Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada on South Africa’s Recognition of Brian Mulroney
December 10, 2015
On behalf of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, and the Conservative Party of Canada I congratulate our former Prime Minister, the Right Honorable Brian Mulroney, on being named a Supreme Companion of the Order of the Companions of O.R. Tambo – the highest honour the government of South Africa can award to a non-citizen. This extraordinary tribute recognizes Mr. Mulroney’s “contribution to the liberation movement of South Africa,” specifically his tireless efforts to help that country throw off the yoke of apartheid and free Nelson Mandela from prison. South Africa’s emergence from apartheid is one of the great human-rights victories of our time, but it was hard-fought. Mr. Mulroney’s principled foreign policy regarding South Africa was in the greatest tradition of Canadian leadership on the world stage: he and his government did what was right, even when it was neither easy nor popular. When some of our closest allies disagreed with Canada’s position, Mr. Mulroney did the right thing by not “going along to get along”. We join all Canadians in our pride at Mr. Mulroney’s well-deserved honour, which reflects the long standing values of our Conservative movement and our commitment to freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law for people here at home and around the world.
